In a recent session, the Knoxville City Council approved Mayor Indya Kincannon’s proposed $499 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year. This budget strategically invests in core services while maintaining the current property tax rate of $2.1556 per $100 of assessed value, the lowest since 1974.
Public Safety Investments
Public safety remains a top priority, with over $102 million allocated for police and fire department salaries and benefits. This funding aims to ensure competitive compensation for first responders, enhancing community safety.
Affordable Housing Initiatives
The budget includes an unprecedented investment of more than $8 million in affordable housing. This allocation features nearly $500,000 to support Habitat for Humanity in constructing a new community in Knoxville, addressing the city’s growing housing needs.
Chilhowee Park Enhancements
As part of the budget, Chilhowee Park is transitioning from an event venue to management under Parks and Recreation. A dedicated four-employee Public Service Department crew will be assigned full-time to the historic park, with $2 million earmarked for capital improvements.
Smoking Ban in Age-Restricted Venues
In addition to budget approvals, the council passed an ordinance banning smoking inside bars and other age-restricted venues, effective January 1, 2027. This ban encompasses cigarettes, cigars, and vaping products, aiming to improve public health and working conditions. Certain establishments, such as cigar lounges and tobacco shops, are exempt from this rule.
These decisions reflect the council’s commitment to enhancing public safety, promoting affordable housing, and improving community health in Knoxville.
